Traditionally, international students in Australia were allowed to work up to 40 hours every fortnight.
The student visa work restrictions were relaxed throughout the pandemic and completely removed in January 2022 to allow primary and secondary student visa holders to work over their standard limit of 40 hours per fortnight to address workforce shortages.
However from 01 July 2023, the working hours cap will be reintroduced at an increased limit of 48 hours per fortnight.
IN DETAIL:
1) Before May 2021, international students in Australia could work up to 40 hours per fortnight.
2) In May 2021, the Australian Department of Home Affairs introduced a temporary work relaxation that allowed no restrictions to the working hours for international students in the hospitality and tourism industries.
3) On 20 January 2022, the Australian Department of Home Affairs extended the temporary relaxation of work limits for student visa holders to all sectors of the economy, meaning that international students in Australia would have no work restriction
4) The work rights relaxation for student visa holders will cease on 30 June 2023.
GOOD NEWS
Although the relaxation of work rights for international students in Australia will end on 30 June 2023, international students will be allowed to work up to 48 hours per fortnight after that date, while, previously the limit was 40 hours per fortnight.
The working hours cap has been reintroduced BUT increased from 40 to 48 hours per fortnight to ensure that students can support themselves financially and gain valuable work experience alongside their studies. Read more about the increase in working hours here.
